Mistral, Europe's AI player from Paris

Who Mistral AI is, what Le Chat is, which models you can run yourself, where your data is stored and what ASML has to do with it. As of October 2026.

Short answer: Mistral AI is a French AI company from Paris, founded in April 2023. It makes language models, many with open weights, and the chat assistant Le Chat. Dutch chip-machine maker ASML is one of its largest shareholders.

The company

The founders are Arthur Mensch (CEO, previously at Google DeepMind), Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix (both previously at Meta, where they worked on the first Llama models). Mistral says it operates in 20 countries and works with more than 125 large enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.

Key moments

  • 27 September 2023: Mistral 7B, released under Apache 2.0.
  • 26 February 2024: Le Chat (beta) and Mistral Large; Microsoft announces a partnership the same day.
  • 9 September 2025: ASML invests 1.3 billion euros in a 1.7 billion euro round at an 11.7 billion euro valuation, becoming the largest shareholder.
  • 8 September 2026: a 3 billion euro round led by Samsung Electronics, with the Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity, at a valuation of more than 21 billion euros.
  • 6 October 2026: Mistral Large 4 in public preview, about one trillion parameters (52 billion active), trained in Mistral's own European data centres. As of 23 October the weights were promised for the end of October.

Models

Among others: Mistral Large 4; Mistral Medium 3.5; Mistral Small 4 and the small Ministral 3 models (3, 8 and 14 billion parameters), all under Apache 2.0; plus models for speech (Voxtral), document OCR and code (Codestral).

Where is your data?

According to Mistral's help centre, data is hosted in the EU by default, unless you explicitly use the US API endpoint. Some features may temporarily transfer data to subprocessors outside the EU under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses; Enterprise customers can switch some of these off.

What does this mean for your business?

  • If you want your data to stay in the EU, Mistral is a serious option. Check per feature and sign a data processing agreement.
  • European does not automatically mean GDPR-compliant; you remain responsible. See AI and privacy.
  • Mistral Small 4 and Ministral 3 are easy to use commercially on your own hardware thanks to Apache 2.0. See Local AI models.
